I traded my lady friend my kayak for her canoe. She said that she liked kayaks better than canoes, and I am not a huge fan of kayaks, but it is what I could afford at the the time for a fishing boat.
So, here I am with a 13' handmade fiberglass canoe. I have no idea who made it. It had been painted about 4 times in its life. Brown seems ti be the origonal color, then light green, red, dark green, white, and dark red.
The last painting was with a brush. We took about 4-5 hours to sand it all down, prep it, and I laid some ivory white paint down on it.
Freshly painted I made a seat frame out of red oak, and wove a seat from some rope that I had laying around the shop. Alex was carving the cross brace while I was making the seat. So I did some research, and found a place to identify the boat manufacturer by the vin code. I found out that it was manufactured by Sawyer Canoe Inc, of Piqua OH. I dont know the date or model but it is a 13' boat. It could possibly the the 'Yankee Rebel' model, but I am not too sure. The only thing that I know about that model was that it was a 13' boat.
If anyone has any info that would be great! I'm going to keep on searching! EDIT: It is not a Yankee Rebel, as they were an inexpensive model that Sawyer made to sell at places like K-Mart in the 70s and 80s. They had a U-Chanel in the hull. This one does not. Correct, it is not a Yankee Rebel.
Your boat has woven roving as the inside layer, so it is one of their standard fiberglass constructions. The Yankee Rebel was mostly fiberglass mat and probably sprayed with a chopper gun, rather than hand built. If you can read the serial number, the last two digits will be the year that it was made. The Sawyer canoe company was in Oscoda Michigan, not Ohio. They made good, quick boats. I was a Sawyer dealer for a while, but I can't remember their model names for many of the boats.
After Sawyer closed their doors, the molds were eventually sold to Superior Canoes in Portland Michigan and they are still building some of those models. The 13'2' solo model is the only one currently listed at that length, and may or may not be what your boat is (back in the day, Sawyer had a pretty big line-up). Superior Sawyer Solo 13 This 13'2' canoe is a stable, all-around solo performer.
It is just the ticket for solo anglers, birdwatchers and those that just want to take their time and look around. Length: 13'2' Width: 31' Depth: 17/12/17 Performance Load Limit: 275 Kevlar Weight: 35 Fiberglass Weight: 46 Price For Kevlar Canoe: $1949.00 Price for Fiberglass Canoe: $1249.00 And yes, you may need to re-think your seat height once you get a chance to test it out. Sawyer seats were generally positioned 3'-4' below the gunwale for stability.
This is not your typical, modern, heavily-recreationalized, overly slow and stable, thermo-plastic canoe. You may find it awfully twitchy with the seat that high. Try it and see.
In any case, it should be a good one and you've done a nice job of bringing it back for another round. I was hoping Todd would chime in. I was wondering what the width might be, because it looks like a pretty decent solo canoe. I also agree that the seat treatment might be better. Do you sit, or kneel?
You may be able to keep the seat high if you kneel - but I would consider angling the front of the seat down a little. The seat frame will hold it's shape against the woven rope is the frame members are flat, instead of vertical on edge. If you give it a couple cross-members just outside the weave, you can then do a 90째 weave that will give better support - and the whole frame will be stronger. Nice job on the restoration, though! It kind of makes me sad in a way. During my adulthood, we have lost so many small canoe companies and so many good canoe and kayak designs.
Many of the old builders that remain are nothing like they used to be - Old Town and Mad River, for example. The development of thermoplastic boats has certainly helped to keep prices at least affordable for a lot of people, but the incredibly high cost of the molds and equipment needed to make them have really put a damper on anybody venturing very far from the most simple, predictable and basic designs with fairly limited performance. There are a lot of modern-day paddlers who are having plenty of fun, but who may never get the chance to paddle a really great canoe or kayak design and see what it can do, and may never get a chance to see what they're missing.
Such is progress, I guess. While there were certainly some dogs in the day, both in terms of bad designs and early, not-so-good composite constructions, it's nice to see some older boats like this Sawyer restored and put back in the water. Yes, I think you'll find it pretty different. It will be less stable than your Disco, but glide better. Be prepared to kneel with your butt resting against the seat frame if needed, while you figure out the seat height question.
You may want to wait for warmer water before trying out any dramatic maneuvers, but you'll eventually find that the boat responds nicely to leaning turns. They present an asymmetrical hull shape to the water, which helps the boat carve turns and also help to get the stems out of the water for a tighter turning radius. Click to expand. That depends on what you're doing.
Solo boats which are paddled from a seat are generally used upright and level unless you're making sharp turns. This keeps the stems in the water for tracking and offers the longest, sleekest, shallowest draft, waterline shape for best glide and speed. You'll sometimes see freestyle paddlers with their boats heeled way over and paddling from a kneeling position. This gets the stems out of the water and offers up a shorter, rounder waterline shape for more maneuverability.
It also gets the paddler closer to being right over the paddle (and the water) for efficiency, but all this comes at the expense of hull speed. The difference, dumb as it may sound, is that these folks aren't trying to get anywhere. They are paddling for the enjoyment of making their canoe dance, and some of them are quite good at it. On a general purpose boat like this one though, if your objective is to get from one end of the lake to the other, keeping it level and paddling from the seat is usually going to get you there faster. Click to expand. (Addendum) The thing about a good canoe like this is that the hull is shaped so that while it may feel a little 'tippy' when upright, as it is leaned to one side or the other, it firms up and resists tipping too far - in a fairly linear fashion (as long as the paddler keeps his head over the boat). That is what makes 'heeling' the canoe for tight turns easy and predictable.
This gives you the best of both worlds.efficient cruising when upright, and the ability to make relatively effortless turns. Were the bottom flatter, it wouldn't feel as 'tippy' when upright - but it would be slower, and the transition between heeled for turning and beyond the point of no return would be much more abrupt. We like to call that 'a stable, but lively hull'.
Canoes A canoe offers the ability to step off land and enjoy the quiet pleasure of an aquatic adventure while staying dry. You can interact with nature silently with paddles or eliminate the self-propelled paddle and opt for a motor. Choose a vessel tailored for your needs to improve the odds of staying dry, whether the plan is to go fishing or take an expedition. What is a canoe? These narrow boats have pointed ends with no keel, and they are typically self-propelled by a paddle. Based on the number of people capable of rowing, multiple paddles can be used with a blade on one end.
Canoes are capable of carrying one to three people, depending on the length, and are either hollow for people to kneel inside or designed with raised seats. What are the different types of canoes? Each type of canoe comes in two categories, solo or tandem, based on the number of people it holds.
Tandem canoes hold two or more people. Expedition: Approximately 18 feet – 20 feet long and designed for long trips and heavy loads. River Tripping: Approximately 15 feet – 17 feet long and designed for maximum maneuverability during river runs in whitewater or racing. Wilderness Tripping: Approximately 15 feet – 18 feet long and designed for running big rivers and portaging. Recreational: Approximately 13 feet – 16 feet long and designed with wider hulls suitable for fishing and overnight trips.
What is the difference between an outboard and inboard motor?. Inboard: This is permanently mounted inside the boat or canoe and penetrates the hull to drive a prop shaft. These are often gas powered, but electric options are also available. Outboard: This is a self-contained portable motor mounted to the edge or outside the boat or canoe. This is the most common option for smaller boats or watercrafts. Gas and electric options are available. What should you consider before buying a canoe?.
Weight: Solo travelers will want to opt for a smaller and lightweight option to easily unload it and maneuver on the water. Larger canoes will need more power to steer, turn, and portage. Capacity: Consider the space needed inside the canoe to fit the number of people desired as well as the weight of all the people and any supplies.
Water: The surface and current conditions of the ocean, lake, or river affect how the boat or canoe paddles. Fishing trips could mean boat rocking, so steadiness will need to be considered.
Materials: Kevlar, wood, and aluminum are the standard materials and will offer different handling capabilities based on the water, number of paddles, and chosen activity.
Best designed tandem 17 ft. Canoe available for general tripping. A trustworthy canoe that will keep your kids and partners safe in challenging situations. Final stability is excellent - with experience you can recover to an upright position after dipping the gunwale under water.
Speed and maneuverability are excellent. Keeping this canoe on course will be a problem for people accustomed to paddling the faddish no-rocker fast canoes, and the gentle flare makes it a little squirrelly at first, but once you become familiar with this canoe it will be your benchmark for judging all other tandems. Old lightweight (57lbs. I was told & that seems reasonble) 17' fiberglass Sawyer just spoiled the heck out of me. Think I bought it abt. Covered a lot of river miles, tandom and solo, fast water or slow, deep, shallow (I liked the way it would skim over rocky shallows), rocky rapids and boulder gardens. Don't think it was really designed for whitewater, but it got me through some pretty fun stuff anyway, and fiberglass is easy to patch.
All but effortless to paddle-fast, easy tracking and yet easy to turn. Seemed to roll pretty easily-not the most stable thing on the water, and I learned to avoid wide windy places, esp. Turn it on a dime, but so cld. A heavy crosswind if I didn't have a bowman to help out. I'm in the market for a new canoe and it's hard to find anything that handles so nicely.
Here's a used fiberglass canoe we received recently with some goods from an old farmstead here in NH recently. This one is about 16 ft plus 3 inches in length and has probably been around since the late 1970's or 1980's. It has a boat registration on it that implies it hasn't been registered here in New Hampshire since 1991. For many years it had been stored in the barn but in the past several years was stored outside upside down on saw horses. The seat frames are with it and it looks like the rawhide webbing could use some attention. No paddles were with it.
The maker seems to be Northeast Canoe Manufacturing, and the tag indicates they were located in Newport, Vermont. Couldn't find much about this company on the internet. Not sure what style or model this one is but it is about 32 inches wide at the widest. Point where the wood center brace board is. It appears to have had fiberglass patches added here and there over they years as we show in the pictures. It could use cleaning or repainting. Overall somewhat rough but has good potential for those who go places where the canoe will be crashed around a little, for those who only use a canoe occasionally for hunting, etc, or inexpensive boat to have at someone's camp.
This canoe is being listed for'Pickup Only' and is located about 15 minutes from the junction of Interstates 89 and 93 near Concord in central New Hampshire. Pickups are most easily arranged nights and weekends. For those who are distant from NH but have trips planned to NH within 45 day from the sale ending date, we will arrange to hold the canoe provided payment is received within 7 days of the end of the auction. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. We'll start this 16 ft Fiberglass canoe low so enjoy the auction. Please let us know if there are any questions.

I originally purchased this canoe as an extra canoe to have on hand when my family would have visitors and they wanted to go out on the lake(I live right next to Blue Marsh Lake) My father-in-law and I have had this canoe out on the lake a few times and the canoe is very stable. Easy to load/unload from the vehicle, and fast. Normal scratches on the bottom from use, but otherwise in excellent condition. Never heard of Oscoda?
This canoe was built in a little canoe factory named Sawyer in Oscoda. Michigan and has excellent craftsmanship. The reason I selected it over many others) Here’s some background information on the company: http:sawyerstoryblog.blogspot.com/2012/07/ralph-sawyers-oscoda-mi-canoe-factory.html.

Out ofChicago. I purchased this canoe inWisconsin from a gentleman who said it had belonged to his uncle and familysince new. It was my intention torestore the canoe to its original condition. But too many projects, not enoughtime, and you get the picture. I am nowrelocating and do not have the ability to take it with. This canoe needs a lot of work and is not functional.
As far as I can tell it has at least sevenbroken ribs and four holes in the planking. The port side gunwale needs to be replaced. The stems need work, someplanking needs to be replaced(obvious holes) The original cane seats were modified with rope and will need to be restored.I stripped most off the varnish. Which was quite a job with all the layers thathad been slathered on over the years. Ifyou want a good winter project then this is a good one. It would make a good family canoe as theYankee was a livery-type and the flat bottom lends itself to goodstability. Presumably from the factory as its a nice job and was commonly used in that era as an alternative to canvas. Still quite sound. Although I have not used this canoe it appears to be sea worthy.
Can ship this canoe if you want to pay the trucking and for a crate. Local pickup is fine too and you can also come to see it before buying if you live near Lancaster, NH. Feel free to ask any additional questions. Thanks for looking!
